The Confused Bridegroom: A Romantic Comedy by Rubina Ramesh

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Confused Bridegroom by Rubina Ramesh is a fun romantic comedy that gives the reader immense happiness. The joyous thing about growing up watching so many Indian movies is the flair of drama that most girls imbibe from a young age. Of course I have had my share of dreams of heroes swooning and dying for never ending love and going against parent’s wishes and what not. There were moments when every family get together used to have some kind of drama being enacted in the same fashion. The Confused Bridegroom reminded me of those lazy days when the summer hols used to be endless fun.

Arvind Randhawa is an Indian NRI from London. He’s been forced to travel to Punjab in India to get married to an unknown female as per the wishes of his grandfather. Now this may seem a really odd concept to people who have no idea about the Indian family system. But sometimes that is exactly how marriages can happen here. Nikki is the quintessential heroine, bubbly and effervescent. And it is LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT for Arvind and Nikki. Luckily she’s the daughter of his grandfather’s friend so it should have been a dream wedding isn’t it? Well, of course not. Nikki is not the bride-to be as Arvind discovers to his horror. Imagine his plight, being forced to marry and to top it off marry the wrong sister too…The mess gets messier with Nikki’s betrothed returning and the arrival of Arvind’s parents and grandfather.

Peppered with some very light moments, A Confused Bridegroom evokes memories of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge(DDLJ) with most scenes reminiscent of the movie that made history in Indian cinema. I loved the author’s use of humor in the story without making it a tear-jerker.

If you are looking for some light-hearted romantic comedy, this book is the perfect choice.
