Miracle Creek by Angie Kim

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Miracle Creek is an amazing study of love and relationships, family ties and loyalty. It’s been more than a week since I have read this but the story still lingers in my mind tearing a hole thru my heart. Yes, there’s a mystery involved but the book is so much more than just that.
There’s the pain of moving from one’s own country to a new location, the heartbreaking journey of adapting to a new culture and language, children I think have it easy coz eventually they are gonna learn everything new but parents struggle and it becomes worse when that struggle makes them feel less worthy of themselves. Miracle Creek shows that struggle in real, the family of Pak Yoo moving from Korea to US and the frustration of having to become a newer version of themselves is described beautifully.
The story also focuses on the sheer struggle of a mother or a caretaker in having a special needs child and the various emotional upheaval that it causes. Miracle Creek actually made me think about this perception of mother having to be perfect without flaws when they are the people who requires the most support in being open and not hide their feelings especially with an autistic child to care for.
Miracle Creek has to be read to know the gamut of emotions that it opens up in our minds and no amount of words in this review would be enough to capture the beauty that is Miracle Creek. I loved everything about Miracle Creek even though at places it actually tore me apart, like TJ’s head banging but for the simplistic writing in conveying a beautiful story, Angie Kim deserves all the accolades.

How far will you go to protect your family? Will you keep their secrets? Ignore their lies?

In a small town in Virginia, a group of people know each other because theyโ€™re part of a special treatment center, a hyperbaric chamber that may cure a range of conditions from infertility to autism. But then the chamber explodes, two people die, and itโ€™s clear the explosion wasnโ€™t an accident.

A showdown unfolds as the story moves across characters who are all maybe keeping secrets, hiding betrayals. Was it the careless mother of a patient? Was it the owners, hoping to cash in on a big insurance payment and send their daughter to college? Could it have been a protester, trying to prove the treatment isnโ€™t safe?
