You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanen

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An exceptionally well written thriller about justice, revenge, sisterhood, loneliness, parental love and neglect, You Are Not Alone pulls in a reader thru the lives of many women who all want the same thing, a sense of belonging to someone, be it a husband or a group of friends; just that, to belong somewhere.

‘Some people contend there are two primal fears. The first and most basic is the end of our existence. The second is isolation; we all have a deep need to belong to something greater than ourselves.’

Shay Miller is a data analyst, who collects data and numbers and records them in a handbook like a person writes journal entries. To say that Shay is at her most vulnerable state would be an understatement, her best friend and roommate whom she has secretly admired is in love with someone else, she’s lost her job and is constantly alone with no friends to boost her spirits. It is this loneliness that leads her heart when she decides to befriend the charismatic Moore sisters who are actually friends of the woman whose suicide Shay was a witness to.

Cassandra and Jane are owners of a PR firm where they handle some high-flying clients and they also have a group of intimate friends; Valerie, an ex-actress; Beth, a public defender; Stacey, a technical whiz kid; Daphne, a boutique owner and Amanda, an emergency room nurse. Each of them has weathered a storm in their personal life and it is the circle of friendship that keep them together and moving forward.

Shay glows with the friendship that is offered to her but is that everything or is there a more sinister reason for the easy acceptance of Shay by the sisters? The chapters are short and snappy with alternating voices from Shay and then the sisters and occasionally from the other women in the group. The intrigue as to why Shay is being used as a scapegoat was so thoroughly entertaining that I had a tough time taking a break in the book. Shay’s actions did sometimes feel a little over the top at one or two instances but otherwise this is one to shock a reader’s senses and keep them glued until the end. Part 3 where Shay realizes the trap she’s fallen into was a whirlwind ride with the tension seeping from the pages.

Brilliant and highly recommended!

The thrilling new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling authors of An Anonymous Girl and The Wife Between Us.

Shay Miller has three strikes against her: no job, no apartment, no love in her life. But when she witnesses a perfectly normal looking young woman about her age make the chilling decision to leap in front of an ongoing subway train, Shay realizes she could end up in the same spiral. She is intrigued by a group of women who seem to have it all together, and they invite her with the promise: “You are not alone.” Why not align herself with the glamorous and seductive Moore sisters, Cassandra and Jane? They seem to have beaten back their demons, and made a life on their own terms—a life most people can only ever envy. They are everything Shay aspires to be, and they seem to have the keys to getting exactly what they want.

As Shay is pulled deeper and deeper under the spell of the Moore sisters, she finds her life getting better and better. But what price does she have to pay? What do Cassandra and Jane want from her? And what secrets do they, and Shay, have that will come to a deadly confrontation?

You are not alone: Is it a promise? Or a threat?
