Little Secrets: A Novel by Jennifer Hillier

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I know I am late to join in Jennifer Hillier craze coz there was not a single recommendation list without Jar of Hearts ever since its release and I was honestly frightened to begin reading Little Secrets. Most times, the expectation can never match up to the hype and I didn’t want to be disappointed but BOY am I glad that I finally read one of the author’s work.

The story begins with a mother’s worst nightmare, just leave the child’s hand for mere seconds and he’s GONE! And one probably thinks that is the worst thing to happen but as days become months, the realization dawns that not knowing what happened to your child is even more nightmarish. One is afraid to hope but can’t leave hope behind, one is afraid to live but is scared to move on, the forever limbo state creating such havoc that there’s no tomorrow. It is this grief that has been perfectly captured by Jennifer Hillier, the downward spiral of Marin after having lost Sebastian was terribly soul crushing.

The missing child scene then takes a backseat as the story shifts to domestic suspense drama and extramarital affair comes into focus. McKenzie’s character as a professional girlfriend was itchy but I liked how she’s unapologetic about the whole homewrecker thing and wants to live life in her own terms. Though it was surprising, how a person who knows what it is to lose a father to another woman would willingly want to destroy some one else’s life.

The suspense is not hard to guess at, well, obviously there are only few suspects to focus on but Little Hearts is an UNPUTDOWNABLE book once you begin reading and for that alone it deserves all the credits.

Overwhelmed by tragedy, a woman desperately tries to save her marriage in award-winning author Jennifer Hillier’s Little Secrets, a riveting novel of psychological suspense.

All it takes to unravel a life is one little secret…

Marin had the perfect life. Married to her college sweetheart, she owns a chain of upscale hair salons, and Derek runs his own company. They’re admired in their community and are a loving family—until their world falls apart the day their son Sebastian is taken.

A year later, Marin is a shadow of herself. The FBI search has gone cold. The publicity has faded. She and her husband rarely speak. She hires a P.I. to pick up where the police left off, but instead of finding Sebastian, she learns that Derek is having an affair with a younger woman. This discovery sparks Marin back to life. She’s lost her son; she’s not about to lose her husband, too. Kenzie is an enemy with a face, which means this is a problem Marin can fix.

Permanently.
