Never Tell by Lisa Gardner

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Stars in my eyes! Really! The Other Daughter was the first book that I read of this brilliant author and from then on I have been hooked. And I am still sad about missing a golden opportunity of meeting her in person and getting a signed copy of one of her books.

From the time Flora Dane’s story began in Find Her, reading a D D Warren book became too emotional for me. Flora Dane is a survivor but her heartbreaking journey from a broken kidnapped doll to a human being is very painful. It defies any logic to have such monsters in our midst and from the ending it is sure Jacob Ness the human version of devil has another book in the offing. But I am glad that Lisa Gardner brought out a hopeful future for Flora. To have D D, Kimberley and Flora in one single book was thrilling and adding to the strong female trio is Evie, a quiet and shy woman haunted by the past.

The mystery was ingenious, for a change I did guess the murderer correctly which never happens with this author but getting to that fireball (literally) end was one roller coaster.

A man is dead, shot three times in his home office. But his computer has been shot twelve times, and when the cops arrive, his pregnant wife is holding the gun.

D.D. Warren arrives on the scene and recognizes the woman–Evie Carter–from a case many years back. Evie’s father was killed in a shooting that was ruled an accident. But for D.D., two coincidental murders is too many.

Flora Dane sees the murder of Conrad Carter on the TV news and immediately knows his face. She remembers a night when she was still a victim–a hostage–and her captor knew this man. Overcome with guilt that she never tracked him down, Flora is now determined to learn the truth of Conrad’s murder.

But D.D. and Flora are about to discover that in this case the truth is a devilishly elusive thing. As layer by layer they peel away the half-truths and outright lies, they wonder: How many secrets can one family have?
