My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Ever since reading Paromjit’s superb review in Goodreads, I have been itching to read this book and after reading Betwixt by the same author I was certain, I would be in for a treat with this series and what an utterly delicious rainbow layered cake this turned out to be.
Sunshine Vicram was not expecting any fireworks on her first day as the Sherriff of her hometown Del Solo in Mexico but it was exactly what she got. Each of the firecrackers was different, the colors so dazzling but with such piercing brightness that hurts the eye. Sunshine, sunny, sun, heck she can’t fix on a pet name even, has everything going wrong on her first day. There are the US Marshals searching for an escaped fugitive, a young girl called Sybil has been kidnapped and Sybil has had a premonition of the event for a long time leaving a letter for Sunshine, the FBI is in to help the case and to add oil to the burning fire her daughter Auri is facing bullying at her school too. Sunshine’s painful past is also explored by the author which I am sure would come full circle in the future books of the series.
The quirky crazy small-town of Del Sol comes alive with the fluid writing of Darynda Jones. The first book in the series establishes the town with all its loving characters and an eccentric vibe to the whole town. The simmering romantic tension between Levi and Sunshine, the cute romance developing between Auri and Cruz, the affection between Sunshine and her BFF Quincy Cooper and the comforting love of Sunshine’s parents are all segments of the story that induces a feeling of being cuddled inside one’s favorite blanket.
Darynda Jones is also exceptional in creating humorous situations in her books, the scenes with the rooster Puff Daddy had me bursting out laughing, well honestly make sure you are not reading this book whist drinking coffee or tea coz it is sure to go up to your nose and give a wheezing fit with all that comedy just rolling off the tongue of every character. There’s also enough suspense in the story that adds to the thrill but nothing can beat the hilarious roller fest that the author offers.
What are you guys waiting for, just pick up the book and roll on the floor laughing, of course, not with a cup of hot tea if you don’t want to have a coughing fit like me….

New York Times bestselling author Darynda Jones is back with the brand-new snarky, sassy, wickedly fun Sunshine Vicram series!
Sheriff Sunshine Vicram finds her cup o’ joe more than half full when the small village of Del Sol, New Mexico, becomes the center of national attention for a kidnapper on the loose.
Del Sol, New Mexico is known for three things: its fry-an-egg-on-the-cement summers, its strong cups of coffee—and a nationwide manhunt? Del Sol native Sunshine Vicram has returned to town as the elected sheriff—an election her adorably meddlesome parents entered her in—and she expects her biggest crime wave to involve an elderly flasher named Doug. But a teenage girl is missing, a kidnapper is on the loose, and all of it’s reminding Sunny why she left Del Sol in the first place. Add to that trouble at her daughter’s new school and a kidnapped prized rooster named Puff Daddy, and Sunshine has her hands full.
Enter sexy almost-old-flame Levi Ravinder and a hunky US Marshall, both elevens on a scale of one to blazing inferno, and the normally savvy sheriff is quickly in over her head. Now it’s up to Sunshine to juggle a few good hunky men, a not-so-nice kidnapping miscreant, and Doug the ever-pesky flasher. And they said coming home would be drama-free.
